About the word list
The dictionary here is an open, publicly available word list built for word games, plus a small, documented supplement of modern short words that the base list predates — QI and ZA among them, which come up constantly in real play.
It is deliberately not presented as the official Crossplay lexicon, because it is not one. Official lists are licensed products. What matters for a free tool is that the source is stated plainly and that the code can swap in a licensed list without any of the solving logic changing — which is how this is built.
Where lists usually disagree
- Recent additions. Words admitted in the last few years may be missing here.
- Regional spellings. International lists carry many more variants than North American ones.
- Rare inflections. Obscure plurals and verb forms are the most common point of difference.
For everyday play the practical effect is small: the two- and three-letter words, which do most of the scoring work, agree almost everywhere.

Common questions
Is this the official Crossplay dictionary?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is an open reference word list of roughly 168,000 entries, close to what you will see in play but not identical. Official lexicons are licensed, and this tool is free, so an open list is what it uses. The source is always labelled.
A word I know is valid comes back NOT FOUND. Why?
Word lists disagree at the edges — newly added slang, proper nouns, and some inflected forms. If a word is valid in your game but missing here, that is a difference between the two lists rather than a bug.
Can I check more than one word?
Yes — type up to twenty words separated by spaces or commas and they will all come back at once. Useful for checking a whole set of candidate hooks before you commit to a play.
Does this work offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes. The dictionary is cached on your device, and every lookup runs locally in a Web Worker — no request goes out when you press Check.
