How the reading works

The image is searched for a 15-by-15 lattice of evenly spaced cells — the board is found by its geometry rather than by looking for a particular colour, which is what lets a whole-screen screenshot work as well as a cropped one. Once the grid is located, each square is measured against the board’s own dominant empty colour to decide whether a tile is sitting on it, and the letter on each occupied square is matched against rendered glyphs at several weights and faces.

Where a tile prints its own point value in the corner, that number is used to narrow the possibilities — the reader knows Scrabble’s price list, so a tile marked 4 can only be F, H, V, W or Y. That single constraint is the difference between reading a board almost right and reading it exactly right.

Every square gets a confidence score. Anything below the threshold is outlined on the board rather than quietly accepted, because a board that is 95% right and silent is worse than one that says which 5% to check.

What this can and cannot promise

Finding the board and working out which squares hold a tile is the solid part: measured against real screenshots it gets every square right, including the word played most recently, which some apps shade a different colour from the rest.

The letters are good but not perfect — on eleven real test boards, ten came back entirely correct and one had a single wrong letter. So it is built to ask rather than assume: when two letters look close enough that it cannot really tell them apart, the square is outlined for you instead of being quietly accepted. Start with those, because a single wrong letter changes two words at once and the solver will happily build a play on it.

Photographs of a physical board are a different problem and are not supported. Finding the board depends on the grid running square with the edges of the image, which is true of a screenshot and false of almost any photograph taken by hand. Perspective correction would be the fix and it is not built. If you are playing on a real board, the manual solver is quicker than fighting the camera.

If it cannot find a board at all it says so and leaves you on the manual editor rather than pretending. Nothing about the flow traps you: the manual solver is the same tool with the same results.

After the board is right
