Scrabble Solver by TilePlayCoach

Put in the tiles already on the board and the seven on your rack. Every legal move comes back ranked by what it scores this turn, with the arithmetic behind each one — which premium squares it collects, which cross words it forms, and whether it plays all seven tiles.

Find the highest-scoring move you can play right now.

Or tap a square and type. Nothing is uploaded.

Board size is 15 by 15.

Enter the tiles already on the board, add your rack, then press Find best moves. Everything runs on your device.

What the solver is actually doing

It generates every legal placement rather than searching a list of words. The dictionary is compiled into a graph where every shared prefix is stored once, and the solver walks that graph outward from the squares that touch a tile already on the board — the only places a new word can attach. For each of those it works out which letters could still form a valid word in the perpendicular direction, and never considers the rest.

The effect is that a full board is solved in a few milliseconds, in your browser, and the answer is complete: if a play exists, it is in the list.

How Scrabble scoring shapes the answer

  • The centre square doubles your opening word. H8 is a double word square as well as the square the first move must cover, so an opening play is worth chasing here in a way it is not in every word game.
  • Using all seven tiles pays 50. Added after every multiplier and never itself multiplied. It is the biggest single swing available, and the solver looks for it on every turn without you asking.
  • Premiums count once. A triple word square you played on last turn scores nothing now, and the solver only applies a premium under a tile the move actually places. See how scoring works for the arithmetic worked through.
  • A tile in two words collects its premium in both. A J on a triple letter square that reads across and down is worth 24 twice over — which is why a one-tile play can outscore a six-tile one.

Reading the results

The list is sorted by raw score — the highest-scoring moves, which is the honest description of what it ranks. Best play re-sorts by score plus the value of the tiles the move keeps back: it prefers a play that leaves you AEINRST over one that leaves you IIIUUUV, at a cost of a few points. That is a heuristic, not equity, and it does not model your opponent or the bag.

Explain score breaks a play into its parts: the main word, each perpendicular word it forms, which premium squares it covers, and the 50 if it uses all seven tiles. Tap any move to preview it on the board before committing to it.

If you have a picture of the board

The screenshot solver is the same tool with the typing removed: it finds the grid in an image, reads the tiles, outlines anything it was unsure about, and hands you the board to correct before solving.

Common questions

How do I enter the board?

Tap a square and type. The cursor moves in the direction shown on the toolbar — press Enter or tap the arrow to switch between across and down. Backspace clears a tile and steps back. If the board is already half full, uploading a picture of it is faster than typing it.

How do I enter a blank?

On the rack, type ? or press + Blank. On the board, type the letter the blank is standing for and press Blank on the toolbar. The tile then scores zero wherever it lands, exactly as in the game, and it is shown in red so you can see which letter is free.

Are these the highest-scoring moves or the best moves?

The highest-scoring. The list is ranked by what each play scores this turn, which is not the same as what a strong player would play — it takes no account of what you keep, what you open up, or what is left in the bag. "Best play" re-sorts by score plus the value of the tiles kept back, and that is a heuristic rather than true equity.

Does it find bingos?

Yes, and it ranks them like any other play. Using all seven tiles is worth 50 in Scrabble, which is the largest single bonus in the game — but a triple word square can still beat one, so compare the two rather than assuming.

Are these words guaranteed to be accepted?

Almost always, not certainly. Word validity here is checked against ENABLE, an open reference dictionary, rather than the official Scrabble word list, which is proprietary. Word acceptance may vary from the current official Scrabble dictionary, mostly in short and recently added words.

Is my board sent anywhere?

No. Solving runs in your browser, in a background thread. Your board and rack never leave the device, and nothing about them reaches analytics.
