Why a Scrabble GO screenshot is a harder picture than it looks
Most board readers assume dark tiles on a light board, because that is what a paper board and most word apps look like. Scrabble GO inverts it: the tiles are pale cream and the premium squares underneath them are the saturated colours. A rule that separated tiles from board by darkness alone read every one of these boards as empty.
What replaced it works from the board’s own premium map. The reader knows where every plain, double-letter, triple-letter, double-word and triple-word square is, so it can learn what an empty square of each colour looks like in your particular screenshot and call anything unlike it a tile. Plain squares anchor that, because there are 164 of them and they are the least ambiguous thing on the board.
One consequence worth knowing: the word played most recently is shaded differently from the rest in this app, which used to make it the only word the reader could see. It is read like any other now.
How a letter is decided
Each occupied square is cut down to the glyph on it and matched against a compiled set of letter templates covering thirteen typefaces, chosen for the shapes that actually differ between fonts. Where a tile prints its point value in the corner, that number narrows the field before any shape is compared — a tile marked 8 can only be J or X, and a 10 can only be Q or Z. That single constraint is the difference between reading a board almost right and reading it exactly right.
When the best two candidates are close enough that the match is not decisive, the square is outlined rather than accepted. A board that is silently 95% right is worse than one that tells you which 5% to look at.
What it does not do
It does not read a photograph of a physical board, it does not connect to the app or your account, and it does not upload the image. It also reads a Classic-style position only — an event board with different premium squares is not something it is told about, so check the board it gives you back before trusting the moves.
If it cannot find a board at all it says so and leaves you on the manual editor rather than pretending. Nothing traps you in the flow: the manual solver is the same tool with the same results, and the classic Scrabble version of this page is the same reader again.
After the board is right
Type your seven tiles and press Find best moves. If the rack was read from the screenshot too, the solve starts on its own. The corrected board stays put, so you can play the move, take next turn’s screenshot and go round again — or press Apply move to write the play in and carry on from there.

Common questions
What should I upload?
A screenshot taken on the device you play on, however your phone takes them. The whole screen is fine — the board is found inside it and the interface around it is ignored, so there is no need to crop.
Was this actually tested on Scrabble GO screenshots?
Yes, and it is the reason the reader works at all on this game. Every screenshot in the test set is a real Scrabble GO board. The first time they were run through it, all eleven came back completely empty: the reader had been written for two games whose tiles are dark on a pale board, and this one puts pale cream tiles on strongly coloured premium squares. The occupancy model was rebuilt around that, and the letter templates now include the shape of R this app draws.
How accurate is it?
On those eleven boards it puts every tile on the right square, and ten of the eleven come back with every letter correct. It is not perfect, so anything it is unsure about is outlined for you to confirm rather than quietly accepted, and it errs towards asking. A wrong letter takes one tap to fix.
Can I photograph a physical board instead?
You can try, and it will usually fail. The board is found by looking for an evenly spaced grid squared up with the edges of the image, which a hand-held photograph does not have. For a real board on a table, typing the tiles in is faster and certain.
Does my screenshot get uploaded?
No. It is decoded and read in your browser and never leaves the device. There is no server that could receive it, no third-party recognition service involved, and nothing about the picture or the board it produced reaches analytics or an advertiser.
It read a tile wrongly. Now what?
Tap the square and type the right letter. Start with the outlined ones, which are the squares it flagged itself. Check anything it read as a blank especially: a blank can stand for any letter, so a wrong one produces moves you cannot actually play.
