The most placeable expensive tile
Ten points, and unlike the Q it needs no partner. JO is two letters. JAB, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY and JET are three. Any of them on a triple letter square is thirty points from the J alone, and most of them fit in the sort of gap that opens up late in a game.
Look for the double play
The J is at its best in a parallel play: placed alongside an existing word so that it scores in both directions at once. Thirty points counted twice is a bigger turn than most seven-letter plays, and it costs one tile.

Common questions
Should I save the J for a longer word?
No. The J scores because of what it is worth, not what it spells. A two-letter play on a premium square beats a five-letter play on plain ones almost every time.
