Why this list is worth memorising outright

There is one Q, four Us, and a good chance you draw the first without the second. Without this list, that means holding a tile you cannot play — six working tiles against your opponent’s seven, for as long as it lasts.

The list is short enough to learn in an afternoon and it pays for itself the first time you play QI across a triple letter square for thirty-odd points instead of exchanging.

QI is the one that matters

Two letters, ten points on the Q, and it fits in gaps nothing else reaches. Everything else on this list is a bonus; QI is the reason to read it. Learn where it hooks — QIS is valid too, which turns a two-letter play into a three-letter one.

Common questions

Are all of these accepted?

This list comes from an open reference dictionary, and Q-without-U words are exactly where lists disagree most. QI is safe. The more obscure entries are worth checking before you rely on one.

When should I exchange instead?

When you hold the Q, no U, no premium square within reach, and the board is tight. One turn spent swapping beats four turns spent playing a tile short.
