The length that unblocks a board
Two-letter words score alongside; three-letter words reach. When the board tightens and nothing long will fit, a three-letter play that hooks onto an existing word is usually what keeps a turn from being a pass — and it often lands on a premium square precisely because the short slots next to premium squares are the ones nobody could use.
Extensions are the real value
Most three-letter words are a two-letter word plus a hook. Knowing that AX becomes AXE, and that PI becomes PIT, PIE, PIG, PIN and PIP, turns one scoring option into six. That is a more useful thing to memorise than a longer word list: it multiplies what you already know rather than adding to it.
The same applies backwards. A word ending in a hookable letter lets you extend an opponent’s word into your own play and score the whole thing.

Two-letter words score beside existing words. Three-letter words reach into gaps, hook onto the ends of words already down, and reach premium squares that nothing longer can get to.
What is the fastest way to learn them?
As extensions of words you already know. Take the two-letter list and add a letter at each end; most of the three-letter list is already in your head in that shape.
