The letter that scores twice
AX, EX, OX and XI are all valid, and all four run in either direction. That is what makes the X the best hook in the game: place it between two existing words and it forms a word both ways, scoring its eight points in each — sixteen from a single tile, before any premium square.
On a triple letter square in a parallel play, one X can be worth forty-eight points on its own. No other tile in the bag does that as reliably.
What to look for
A gap with a letter above and below it, or left and right, where an X completes a valid two-letter word in both directions. Those spots are common and almost always overlooked, because players are searching for words rather than for squares.

Common questions
Why is the X better than the Z if it is worth less?
Because it scores twice more often. Eight points counted in two directions beats ten points counted once, and the two-letter X words work in both orientations.
