The tile that decides a game either way
Ten points and one copy. Played well the Q is thirty or forty points in a turn; held to the end of the game it is ten points subtracted from your score and given to your opponent. The gap between those two outcomes is larger than most players’ entire margin of victory.
The practical rule is unromantic: play it early, play it for whatever it scores, and stop waiting for the triple word square. Four Us exist in the bag against one Q, so the odds of holding both at once are worse than they feel.
QI, and why it matters more than the rest of this list
QI is two tiles, eleven points at face value, and playable almost anywhere. On a triple letter square under the Q it is thirty-one; forming a word in both directions it is more. It is the single highest-value piece of vocabulary in Scrabble relative to how long it takes to learn, and it removes the Q problem entirely.

When you do have the U
QUAD, QUIT, QUIZ and QUOD are all four tiles and all playable on a crowded board. QUIZ is the one to look for: two ten-point tiles in four letters, worth 22 at face value and 66 on a triple word square.

Common questions
How much is the Q worth in Scrabble?
Ten points, the joint highest with Z. There is exactly one Q in the bag, so you will hold it about once a game — and what you do with it that turn is worth more than several ordinary turns.
What if I have no U?
There is a short list of words that take a Q without one, and QI is the most useful word in the game for this. Learning those thirty-odd words is the difference between the Q being an asset and a tile that costs you a turn.
Should I hold the Q for a big play?
Usually not. Every turn you hold it you are playing with six tiles instead of seven, which costs more over three turns than the premium square you are waiting for is worth. Play it as soon as it scores reasonably.
