The friendliest of the expensive tiles
Ten points, and no strings attached. The Q needs a U or a memorised list; the J is awkward in short words; the X wants a specific kind of square. The Z simply plays: ZA, ZO, ZED, ZIP, ZAP, ZIT, ADZ, BIZ, FEZ and a dozen more are all two or three tiles, and all get ten points onto the board this turn.
The practical consequence is that a Z should almost never sit on your rack for more than a turn. There is nearly always somewhere to put it, and the difference between twenty-one points now and thirty points in three turns is not worth playing a tile short.
The plays worth looking for
- ZA — two tiles, eleven points, fits beside almost anything. On a triple letter square under the Z it is thirty-one.
- ZAX — nineteen at face value from three tiles, because it carries the Z and the X. If both are on your rack this is the word to look for first.
- ZIZ and ZUZ — only reachable with a blank, but a blank standing in for a Z costs you nothing and doubles the tile you are holding.
- ZED, ZEK, ZIN, ZAG — three-letter words that reach a premium square two spaces away, which two-letter words cannot.
The one to plan for
A Z on a double letter square, placed so it reads in two directions at once, scores twenty in each word — forty points from one tile before any word multiplier. That pattern is worth more than most bingos and takes one turn of patience rather than three. The solver finds it for you when it exists.

Common questions
How much is Z worth in Scrabble?
Ten points, the same as the Q, and there is exactly one of them. Unlike the Q it needs no companion letter, which makes it the most reliable of the big tiles.
What is the best short Z word?
ZA at two tiles and eleven points is the workhorse — it fits almost anywhere and gets the tile played. ZAX is the scoring one: nineteen points at face value from three tiles, because it carries the Z and the X together.
Should I wait for a premium square?
One turn, not three. Holding a Z means playing with six tiles, and the cost of that compounds. If a double letter square is open, take twenty-one and move on.
