A ten-point tile you cannot always play

The Q is worth ten, which makes it the joint most valuable tile in the game and the one most likely to sit on your rack for six turns. There is one in the bag, and holding it without a U is the classic way to lose a game slowly: every turn you keep it, you are playing with six tiles instead of seven.

Play it early, on a premium square

A Q on a triple letter square is thirty points before the word multiplier, which is why QI played across a triple letter is worth more than most five-letter words. Take that trade whenever the board offers it rather than holding out for QUIZ.

If you have the Q and no U and no premium square in reach, the Q-without-U list is the short answer, and the exchange is the honest one. A turn spent swapping beats three turns spent stuck.

Common questions

Is the Q worth holding for QUIZ?

Rarely. QI on a triple letter square scores about as much as QUIZ on plain squares, and it happens this turn rather than in four. Take the points.

How many Qs are in the bag?

One, and two blanks that could stand in for it — though spending a blank on a ten-point letter it scores nothing for is usually a poor trade.
