The one-tile turn
Five two-letter words contain an X — AX, EX, OX, XI, XU — and between them they cover every vowel except U on the left and I and U on the right. That is what makes the X unique among the expensive tiles: it can be dropped into a single square between two words already on the board and form a legal word in both directions at once.
When that square is a triple letter square, the X counts three times in each word. Twenty-four points across, twenty-four down, forty-eight points for one tile — more than a typical bingo, from a rack you would otherwise have called poor.
How to actually find it
Look for a double or triple letter square with an existing tile directly above or beside it, then check whether an X there spells one of the five. It is a pattern you can learn to see in a couple of seconds, and it comes up more often than any other big-scoring shape because it needs only one empty square rather than a run of them.
The solver finds these automatically and shows the arithmetic for each — press Explain score and the two words are listed separately with the premium applied to both.
When there is no hook
FAX, FIX, FOX, LAX, LOX, MAX, MIX, POX, SAX, SEX, SIX, TAX, TUX, VEX, WAX and ZAX are all three tiles, and every one of them puts the eight points into play. ZAX is the one to remember: nineteen points at face value, because it carries the Z as well.
The X is also a decent tile to hold for one turn, which the J and the Q are not — its hook potential means the square you are waiting for is a single square, and single squares open up every turn.

Common questions
Why is the X the best of the big tiles?
Because it is the only expensive tile that makes a two-letter word in both directions. AX, EX, OX, XI and XU mean an X placed between two existing words scores twice, collecting its premium square in each — which turns eight points into forty-eight.
How much is X worth in Scrabble?
Eight points, the same as the J, and there is exactly one of them in the bag.
What is the highest-scoring X play?
A single X on a triple letter square, placed so it forms a two-letter word across and down at once. It scores 24 in each word — 48 points from one tile, more than most seven-tile plays.
