Eight points and one place to put them
The J is the awkward one. English will not end a word with it, will not put it beside a consonant, and offers exactly one two-letter word containing it — JO. So where a Z can be dropped almost anywhere, a J needs the board to cooperate.
That makes JO worth learning on its own. Two tiles, nine points at face value, twenty-five with the J on a triple letter square, and playable wherever an O is already sitting or a space beside one exists.
The three-letter workhorses
JAB, JAG, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY, JET, JEU, JEW, JIB, JIG, JOB, JOE, JOG, JOT, JOW, JOY, JUG and JUS. Nineteen words, all three tiles, all built as J plus a vowel plus a common consonant. Reading that sentence twice is most of the work — the pattern is so regular that you do not really need the list once you have seen it.
JEU and JUS are the two that save otherwise dead racks, because they use the U that is doing nothing else.
Do not wait for the perfect square
Eight points is enough to be worth placing and not enough to be worth three turns of holding. A J played for eighteen on turn four beats a J played for thirty-five on turn nine, because the three turns you spent with six usable tiles cost you more than the difference.
The exception is when a triple letter square sits where a J would read in both directions. Twenty-four points twice over is worth one turn of patience — and the solver will tell you whether it is actually there.

Common questions
How much is J worth in Scrabble?
Eight points, the same as the X, and there is exactly one in the bag. It is worth ten in some other word games, which catches people out — in Scrabble it is the joint second-most expensive tile, not the most.
Why is the J harder to play than the Z?
Because English almost never puts a J at the end of a word or next to a consonant. JO is the only two-letter word with one, so a J needs either that word or a vowel to its right and somewhere for the rest of the word to go.
What is the best J play?
JO on a triple letter square, which is twenty-five points from two tiles. Failing that, JAB, JAG, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY, JET, JEU, JIB, JIG, JOB, JOG, JOT, JOY and JUG are all three tiles and all get the thing played.
